Hilltop planning permission

You may recall that some time ago there was a proposal to open cast for coal in the Hiiltop area, i.e. to the west of the Pirelli Bridge which would have obliterated part of the trackbed of the Ashover Light Railway. (The developer had offered to reinstate after the coal had been extracted.)

We have recently heard that Derbyshire County Council hasĀ  refused planning permission, although the developer could presumably follow the appeal processes.

The section of the ALR east of the Pirelli Bridge was open casted many years ago (well before the ALRS existed), resulting in the complete removal of the approach embankment. The siteĀ  of Clay Cross & Egstow station plus the Clay Cross Works has also been redeveloped, removing many traces of Clay Cross’s industrial heritage. Note also that Ogston Reservoir covers part of the old ALR trackbed.
