ALRS & the postal dispute

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

It would be much appreciated if anybody who has recently ordered merchandise could email or phone Graham Ludlam (contact details are on this website or in WTRE) to confirm its safe arrival, or to report non arrival after a reasonable time has elapsed.

Obviously there can be delays in your order form being delivered to us, and in your orders being delivered to your mail address.

Thanks.

Have you read yours yet?

Issue 12 of WTRE (Where The Rainbow Ends), the “in house” magazine of the Ashover Light Railway Society.

This magazine is sent free of charge to ALRS members.  Please see the Merchandise page to purchase back copies at £2.50 each (free p & p) and a binder to keep them in or, better still, the Membership page for a downloadable membership form to ensure you get all future editions.

Peggy & Bridget came home after over 50 years

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Yes, it did happen!  Peggy and Bridget did meet up at the society’s AGM.  The nameplates from these two Baldwin locos did return to Ashover, and were unexpectedly joined by a Joan nameplate as well.

In fact Peggy’s whistle also put in an appearance, as well as many other artefacts from the old ALR.  Considering the fact that it will soon be 60 years since the closure of the railway it is surprising the amount of material that is still available.  Newly discovered items are still turning up.

(Note:-Peggy’s nameplate and whistle were on display courtesy of the NGRM, Tywyn)

Archive Film

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

At the 2009 AGM/Exhibition there were two film clips of ALR interest.

One was of 1969 vintage showing the removal of one of the ex W.D. “D” class trucks from Fallgate. Following this link will direct you to the Youtube clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQIBEPjmJ44

For copyright reasons I cannot put a direct link to the second clip of the Wembley carriages running at the British Empire Exhibition.  However, if you visit the BritishPathe site and enter a suitable search string you should be successful.

Charitable Status for the ALRS?

Monday, April 20th, 2009

When the ALRS was first formed back in 2006 one of our aims was to achieve charitable status. For a variety of reasons this goal took a back seat for a while, but in recent months this aim has been reviewed and is now being actively purused.

While nothing is yet confirmed, the society is hoping to achieve charitable status this year and more information will be provided to members and made availabe on the website in the following months.

AGM Exhibition Update

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Progress continues apace on preparation for the exhibition on June 28th, with some original and  exciting ALR artefacts confirmed to make an appearance; including an original Bridget nameplate, a No Trepassing sign and a further nameplate and whistle visiting from the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum in Tywyn, Gwynedd! Our grateful thanks to the NGRM for agreeing to release these items for a day trip!

We are keen to have as many original artefacts available as possible and if any society members or visitors  have anything in their possession they would like to display at the exhibition, we would love to hear from them. Be it photographs, tickets, timetables or even a shovel (!) we would be thrilled to see them displayed.

Also we are continuing to search for photo/cine/video footage for the ALRS archives and are keen to have some of this on display. Anyone in possession of such footage, that they are happy to have exhibted, please do get in touch.

For all enquiries about exhibiting at the AGM please contact Nicola Fox at: n.fox@alrs.org.uk

Publicity Officer

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

It is with sadness that I have to report that as of the AGM on June 28th 2009 Nicola Fox will step down as the Publicity Officer for the Ashover Light Railway Society.

Unfortunately the pressures of her career have prevented Nicola from dedicating the time she believes her position on the committee requires, and as such she has stepped back to allow someone else to take on this role.

Being one of the original four founders of the ALRS almost three years ago, it is with great sadness that I have accepted Nicola’s resignation.  Her input and efforts on the Society’s behalf cannot be understated; we have gained some invaluable radio and press publicity thanks to her efforts and the revamped website speaks for itself.

A nomination has been received for a member who is happy to fill the position of Publicity Officer, pending approval at the AGM, and further details should be appearing the next issue of Where the Rainbow Ends.

To close, I would like to thank Nicola for her efforts and wish her all the best for the future.

AGM Exhibition

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

The ALRS is very pleased to be presenting its first exhibition!

On Sunday 28th June 2009 the Annual General Meeting of the ALRS will be held in the Amber Hall, Ashover Parish Hall starting at 1.30pm.  In the Fabric Room, where last years AGM was held, an exhibition will be placed for both members and the local public to attend. This exhibition will be open for a period before and after the meeting, exact time still to be confirmed.

The exhibition will feature:

  • A history of the ALR, illustrated by society photographs (any members with any such images please see the bottom of this article for how to feature them in this exhibition) and artefacts from the ALR
  • The story of the ALRS so far, including the original proposal, its aims and what is has achieved since its inception
  • A working model layout of the ALR
  • A gallery of paintings representing the ALR (prints of some of which will be available in the shop set up between the two main rooms)

Members of the committee shall be on hand to answer any questions from members of the society or public.

Any members who have any images, artifacts, video or other material that they feel would be relevant to the exhibition should please contact n.fox@alrs.org.uk. PLEASE NOTE, due to memory space do not send attachments without prior arrangement as they are likely to be bounced.

Watch this site and local press for further announcements.

Local Area Group Launched!

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

The first meeting of the Ashover Light Railway Society’s Derbyshire local area group was held on Saturday, 21 February 2009, at 1pm, at the ‘The Old Poets Corner’ in Ashover.

The meeting was opened precisely at 1pm by Ralph Gibbons who was acting as chairman of the group. Ralph kindly agreed to chair this meeting and the subsequent one, but his duties as the Editor of Where the Rainbow Ends magazine do not allow him to take this position up in the long run. Any member wishing to contact Ralph and volunteer to run this group please feel free to do so! Contact details can be found in the back of the magazine.

The meeting had a healthy attendance of 20 to 30 members. In future, Local Area meetings shall also be announced via the website to keep members as up to date as possible. It is intended to hold meetings on a monthly basis with the next meeting date fixed for Saturday, 28 March 2009, at 1pm at The Old Poets Corner.
